Acid Rain
This includes snow, rain, hail or even fog that has become highly acidic from sulphuric and nitric acid. Sulphur dioxide is primarily produced by industrial processes such as coal-fired electrical generating facilities. Canadian gasoline also contains extremely high levels of sulphur. In the Atlantic region, acidification of spawning waters has caused a loss to the salmon fishery of 9,000 to 14,000 fish per year. |
FACT: 142,000 Canadian lakes are estimated to have been damaged by acid rain since the 1970s. |
